The Merchant of Venice

The Merchant of Venice

Royal Opera House

Preis ab € 158.30

André Tchaikowsky’s only opera is an adaption of Shakespeare's The Merchant in Venice. It is an important rediscovery in 20th-century opera and receives its London premiere at the Royal Opera House in a production by Welsh National Opera.

Bassanio borrows some money from his friend Antonio so he can court the beautiful heiress Portia. Antonio is expecting a returning shipment and is so short on ready cash that he in turn borrows from Shylock.
Shylock has previously been much abused by Antonio and only agrees to the loan with the promise that if Antonio defaults, Shylock may take a pound of his flesh.
Bassanio wins Portia’s love – but Antonio’s ships are reported lost, and Shylock insists on his penalty. In court, Portia (disguised as a lawyer) proves that it is impossible for Shylock to take only his pound of flesh without also drawing blood, not stipulated in the contract. The court forces the defeated Shylock to convert from Judaism to Christianity.

During the Royal Opera's summer season 2017 there are only two shows of this somewhat bizarre comedy - you do not want to miss it!
